Mayor wants property owners to be responsible for removing graffiti

Art vs. Graffiti? Freedom of expression? Charter of rights and freedoms? Far too much grey area for anything to be done in a timely fashion. At the end of the day, noone has the right to alter or deface anything that does not belong to them without permission; the person who did it should have to clean it up....but good luck enforcing that! The system catches and releases people who have committed far worse crimes. I'm tired of reading news stories that end with "....also charged with breach of probation." We need to bring back accountability; whoever defaced a property should clean it up.

Faustus, stop being so dramatic......look at the overall message of a post before zeroing in on one line and blowing it out of proportion

It's about time the Ministry of Transportation starts shutting down driving schools that are giving/selling A and D licenses to truck drivers who have no right putting people at risk. Bravo......a good start. Now time to blitz and remove driving privileges from current operators without proper licences and insurance. City also needs to shut down budding truck yards like the one on Stone Rd E near Watson.

The city wanted to discuss the choice of the word "BS" not censor an overall message. It would not be ok to display derogatory racist words or profanity in the lobby of a public building in the name of art. An over reaction to jump to "oppression". Within the artist's right to pull the exhibit, but give the money back.

Drivers don't have an issue slowing down in school zones during school hours. In this world of technology, speed cameras could be active, together with flashing warning signs, during school hours. Drivers would definitely slow down on the spot, not after the fact. Safety accomplished. Outside of school hours, there is no need to ride the brakes at 30. There was nothing wrong with a limit of 50 on main roads, 40 in the subdivisions (should there actually be kids playing outside like the good old days), and 30 during school hours. Also, get rid of those ridiculous 40 begins and 40 ends signs 10 feet from a stop sign or traffic light......keep it simple.

The longer hours at a hospital is a must.....bad enough to sit with a loved one for hours and hours in emerge or after being admitted and then not having anywhere to get something to eat. I always found that odd.....never is a coffee shop more needed. I'm sure staff will be happy as well.

Excellent question! Do they need to be retested?

Again, things always just go too far. We went from not having bike lines at all (the few who wanted to or had to use their bikes in winter used common sense and stayed off the roads when the roads were bad) to concrete barriers sectioning off bike lanes. Without the concrete barriers, snow plows could simply clean the whole roadway; now we need a separate, smaller plow to clear the bike lane for the extremely low number of people biking in winter. What a waste of tax money. This is Canada! We get snow approximately 5 months of the year. We fight a losing battle against Mother Nature to keep roads clean and safe while balancing environmental concerns about salt use and now we need to keep bike lanes clear??? There are so many other pressing issues that money could go to...our sad hospital facility, housing, education...pick one. Those who unfortunately can't afford a vehicle, or choose not to drive one, can use the bus, drive share, or friends during winter. Common sense please!

I just hope city officials stick to their requirements and, more importantly, listen to the people they are elected to represent rather than let developers bulldoze through with their own plans. That is exactly what happened in Guelph/Eramosa township on Jones Baseline with the rezoning of farm land to industrial......still waiting to see what happens with the current application to rezone the corner of Hwy 7 and Road 29 to allow a truck yard!!!! Overwhelming opposition at the April township meeting but crickets since. Will big developers get their way again?????? Certainly hope not.

Agree 100%. We too have bucked heads with City Hall to the point of walking away from renovating or adding on to existing rentals. Seems builders have way more flexibility but, according to this article, aren't very interested. Easy to say City Hall wants more housing, but they are definitely not user friendly.

Class size and resources is a whole other topic.......you want to improve results, lower class sizes, hire more EAs for students with special needs and insist on acceptable behaviour (parental support is a must) and the results will improve.

Agreed! All that talk about clearing bike lanes......our main roads are a mess! I haven't seen plows out at all. I don't remember our roads ever being this bad; in the past, despite the heavy snow fall, we could always bank on clean, salted, safe roads within 24 hours .....what is going on?????

We are at the point of acknowledging the problem and its cause; time to start focusing on and delivering solutions to deal with it, reverse it as much as possible and stop it. Parents need to set limits at home. More importantly, they need to support and respect teachers and administrators who set limits and consequences rather than blindly defending their children.

Teacher effectiveness only goes so far......much of a child's attitude, approach, willingness to learn, behaviour, respect etc comes from home......comments like yours prove my point. Most people who make negative comments about teachers wouldn't last a week in a classroom; they would most certainly never leave their jobs to deal with today's entitled, unmotivated kids and, even worse, their parents.

Violent temper tantrums and lack of attention span is a sad reality in our schools. Parents must set screen time limits at home and consequence inappropriate behaviour. More importantly, parents need to start supporting teachers and administrators who are desperately trying to set boundaries and modify behaviour to create a safe learning environment for all students. Parents must stop blindly defending their children and blaming anyone and everyone else. We have to stop evacuating classrooms because one child is destroying the room (sadly happens more than you think) and start sending them home.....Parents should deal with the little monsters they have created. Home schooling is always an option. It's not fair to the rest of the kids.

Classrooms have changed so much in the last few years, it's a miracle the scores are as high as they are. The violent behaviour that goes unconsequenced in Elementary schools has made it extremely difficult and stressful for teachers and students to focus on curriculum. It's hard to focus on math if a student is trashing a room because they are going through iPad withdrawl. If a child is removed, they are promptly returned to class. What happened to zero violence? Time for these kids to be sent home to their parents for everyone's sake. High schoolers can redo assignments, recover credits, and do alternate forms of assessment without any real deadlines. Sadly, kids have caught on that they have to do very little; the adults will do the rest to "ensure success." Time to focus on the bigger picture. Students and staff need to feel safe and supported; grades will automatically improve. Behavioural standards and respect need to improve to give our society a fighting chance.

There is really no other choice......unless we change the mentality that someone is to blame if someone gets hurt. Still not sure how City of Guelph is getting away with leaving roads in such horrible condition. Private plow companies are paying astronomical insurance rates; many are leaving the industry.

The decision to cancel buses is made by the bus companies.....safety of students and drivers? yes, but liability at the forefront for sure. Going remote sounds ideal but many parents will decide to drive their kids to school because kids can't be left home alone......free daycare, besides all the learning 🙂

There is industrial land with existing infrastructure available at Hanlon and 401, Guelph Line and 401 and elsewhere in GET for a truck lot if needed. Eden Mills and Rockwood will be flooded with trucks on roads that are not equipped to handle the increase in traffic.Contamination of the aquifer and existing water wells is inevitable.Existing truck yards in the province are unsafe, disorganized dumping grounds plagued with illegal activity, unlicensed drivers and unsafe vehicles. No place for any of that in our community.Council needs to reverse the decision to earmark this land for industrial use that was made 35 years ago; it no longer makes sense given there are now homes, a place of worship and entire towns that will be negatively impacted.

Not really fair to teach new material with so many kids missing......you would comment on that for sure if your child was at a disadvantage because they take a bus. Today would be spent on review, catching up on assignments, one on help or independent work in high school. Elementary would be very similar.....maybe a movie connected to a theme or concept.....a win-win, really. Any child who could make it safely to school is safe snd cared for. Thank you teachers!
