We shall be signing today. Time for Alberta to claw back the at least net $14 billion (or more) in Alberta taxes which goes east to the federal government each year and then are re-packaged as "equalization" payments to other provinces. Quebec has been receiving payments for about 60 years in a row now. The biggest province Ontario declared itself "have not" about 4 years ago to start taking western tax dollars as well. Neither province shows any signs at all of wanting to stand on their own feet financially as long as Alberta, Sask., and BC pay them each year. That at least $14 billion a year could eliminate the provincial deficit and still leave billions to pay teachers, nurses, doctors, police and firefighters everything they want as well as building several new schools and hospitals every year. Sign the petition and give the current and future Alberta governments, (including potential NDP ones) the authority to negotiate with Ottawa for a much better deal or to leave Canada.
Hi Tarmer's Son. Thanks for your sweeping description of me, family members, friends and many others. Nice. (That description hasn't flown in Quebec these last 50 years and it won't fly in Alberta or Saskatchewan either in the years to come). The ones playing victim as you call it are the self declared have not provinces sucking many billions of tax and other dollars out of Alberta, Sask. and BC every year. Lots of Albertans and Sask. people have had enough. Their voices are getting stronger and more numerous every month. Just wait until after Quebec has its third referendum in 2027 or 2028. The response in the west will be quite different than it was in 1980 and 1995. The great Canadian equalization game is going to end one way or another. By the way Alberta can separate just as Quebec can. Have a look at the federal Clarity Act.
Di69 you were first in commenting but last in supporting free speech and the right of citizens to make their views known through petitions or referendums. Were you against the "Canada Forever" petition as well? If you support a petition then sign it and if you don't then don't sign it.Same with referendums, vote for or against as is your right but don't say that those who disagree with you respectfully and civilly should be shut down or cancelled.
If you are looking at the online edition of this article check out the 4th photo of the six photos in the photo reel collection. The one with Ms. Pugh speaking, I noticed that all the articles on the screen behind her seem to be by the very same journalist who wrote this article and who says "Highwood NDP communications coordinator Dana Pugh gives a report about the group's successes over the last year during the constituency association's annual general meeting in Okotoks on March 1." A theme he repeats in the sub-headline for this whole article as well. Looks like the Western Wheel is both one of the sources of this "group's successes" news as well as being a reporter on it and an opinion giver about it. Looks like a bit of a closed circle in this particular situation benefited the local NDP.
This benefits all Canadian agriculture, not just Alberta. A lot of the credit for these outcomes should go to our Premier Danielle Smith and her team. Well done. We shall see though whether the CBC, Globe and Mail, Premier Doug Ford, Premier Legault, etc. are willing to give her any credit and willing to say maybe, just maybe, she had the correct approach. Don't hold your breath though.
