Polyethics taking steps to take the stink out of neighbourhood

A building permit has been granted for an extension?? This past May, a Ministry of the Environment representative was quoted in Orillia Matters as saying "It's an incompatible land use. In no way, shape or form should a residential home be 60 metres to an industrial building. It's just poor planning all around." And our City is allowing an extension? You have got to be kidding me! This company forced the residents to make 100's if not 1000's of complaints, over a couple of years, to get the smell addressed. Now we are going to allow an expansion and "hope" that they comply with the MECP's guidelines. How can we trust that their past non-compliance is going to change with this new expansion?

No amount of die diligence would have covered the tripling in size of this property in the last couple of years. They should continue to produce jobs and pay taxes, but they should do it while adhering noise and odour regulations.

You are not understanding that the factory was no where near this size even 10 years ago. It did not produce scent then and there was no noise to speak of.

They have the funds to make the changes to control the odour emissions, plain and simple. No one has to be out of work, they simply have to install the scrubbers or whatever it is to eliminate the smell. They just don't want to spend the money.

The factory has been there for many years, but the new scented product has not. That scented product should not be manufactured at a plant within proximity to any homes, regardless of whether or not they are waterfront.

You are absolutely right about what you are smelling. It is not people's dryers. They produce products with a "lavender" scent and a "fresh smell" scent. We all know fresh has no scent. Some days it's intolerable and everyday it is concerning. We shouldn't have to smell anything at all.

Most of the complainants live within 500 metres of the plant and are affected almost daily. Sign the petition https://chng.it/RYjSdjzzvL

The demand for a scented product does not mean it is beneficial or even acceptable. The odour is obnoxious and offensive. It can be removed or eliminated.

Not at all sure what self-importance might have to do with a company that scents the air outside of their boundaries. It should simply not be allowed.

No one wants anyone to lose their job. The company just needs to stop scenting the air. They themselves are putting people's jobs at risk by not complying with Ministry standards.

If you haven't sat down with a resident in that immediate neighbourhood, I encourage you to do so, otherwise you have no idea what they go through. Ask them how they've been impacted daily by the noise and the odour. A good employer can produce a clean product. No one needs to buy scented bags. And those area residents deserve clean air.

They are taking credit for something they haven't done yet. The phasing out of the lavender scent is after they've used up their existing inventory of raw materials. Who knows how long that may take? And they will continue to produce "fresh scent" products.
They are not phasing out scented bags altogether. They are only phasing out the lavender scent, not the fresh scent. They have no timeline whatsoever. This could take a very long time.
They ended their lavender line but continued on with their fresh scent line which is just as offensive. This is not new information. When the scent and the noise extend beyond their property boundaries, this is where the legality comes into play. They can do whatever they want within their own property. If you read comments here and on every past story regarding this issue, the scent extends well beyond the nearby residents.
You may continue to smell it for some time. Phasing out has no timeline.
The factories were there first, but they added to that factory, and the new products being manufactured are not compatible with a residential neighborhood. All we can hope for is that they stop scenting our air.
This is not about the pleasant smell of "dryer vents". This odour is slam-you-in-the-face disgusting. It doesn't matter if some people don't find it offensive, scenting of our air cannot be tolerated. Go for a walk down there, more than once, then provide an informed opinion. Some homes within a few hundred metres of the plant have been there for over a hundred years. The MOE needs to do their jobs and get an abatement plan in place. Their has been a change to the original use of that manufacturing plant, and it is not in compliance of Ministry guidelines. Residents have the right to the enjoyment of our City's nature trails as well as their own back yards. Sign the petition at change dot org Stop the Stink.
It would seem that common sense should prevail, but these people are all about profits, with no regard for their neighbours. Sign the petition at change dot org stop the stink.
