Decommissioning, demolition of West Ferris Arena recommended ahead of committee debate

Leave the pad and boards and glass and put a roof over it in the same way the Callander rink was built with Federal support. Kids could use it year round with ball hockey or skate boarding in summer, ice rink in December that would last through winter rains/thaws til late March unlike our other open air rinks. The only walkable rink in West Ferris is Lion's behind West Ferris school. Riverbend is a drive for everyone. The rink is central West Ferris walking distance for kids. The City used to make two rinks on the tennis courts with a full set of boards every year beside the West Ferris Arena. That evaporated in the early 90's.

Watch for Blandings Turtles and Hognose Snakes on the move due to renoviction. Both are, or were, endangered species in the province.

I'm thinking if the rules become "pay it back if I get caught" I could take a run at a bank in a ski mask. Nothing to lose right?

Next in the news ... province takes control of City of North Bay, dismisses mayor and council.

I'm not privy to the origin of the $1.4 million. Surely it would not come from the "Tax Rate Stabilization Fund" as this was not in any way an emergency like an unexpected major infrastructure failure. Must be from the 2026 city budget. Right? The same city budget that has planned for and itemized the operational costs of this facility for 2026 like it does for every other recreational facility in the city, right?

News flash CUPE members abusing sick time has bankrupted local hospital. It's quite a racket but of course it isn't all CUPE members. Maybe the media can report on this issue.

Wow, how rapid. In the interim between announcing 2+1 and last year the 400 from Hwy 9 north of Toronto to Toronto was expanded from 3 lanes to 6 lanes. Now this is still just word salad from the southern Ontario Conservatives until it happens.

I could drive from N.Bay to Union Station in 5.5 hrs.

Truly unmarked OPP vehicles with cameras should be driving the New Liskeard to North Bay stretch to see the callous nature of transport drivers toward passenger vehicles. Just drive the limit and charge every tailgater and lane bandit. New pavement with passing lanes will help but most don't care if they misjudge and run you onto the shoulder at 95 kph.

Imagine if they did this the third weekend in January in Callander bay. Most of the catchable walleye have left Callander Bay for freezers long before now. Some of them were probably legal.

It is on a passing lane once again proving more lanes won't entirely fix the problem. Driver skill and driver attitude left wanting.

Too many dogs in town to have any place where the dog "treats" can be left. Pick 'em up, big or small.

Well based on the math scores in the province these should be renamed math camp days. A whole day of math work and review.

This is our own "Epstein" issue. In our world we have a mayor who is under investigation by the OPP for his abuse of finances and there have been no updates on charges. This needs to be kept in the spotlight in particular was he seems to be working at cross purposes with the councillors appointed to Cassellholme's board who are trying to shine light on financial issues with Cassellholme.

I was thinking it's about time for the unregulated reserve that can pull $100k at the drop of the hat to the ski hill it could be used in part to give taxpayers relief from the water bill increase. If there is a published and detailed plan and strategy for collection and spending of this fund that says otherwise then I guess not. I'd bet there is no such document on the shelf at city hall.

Not really a shocker given the "careless with the guidelines" approach it appears most drivers take to the Highway Traffic Act in the North Bay area. Getting our North Bay police engaged with traffic enforcement and reporting on it regularly in the media as a deterrence for those that can read.

The knee jerk reaction to redaction needs to be well and truly vetted and it be an exception rather than the default approach.....unless minimal transparency is the policy.

One has to manage RRSPs throughout life to determine when to use TFSAs and when to start reducing them to manage taxes. If one doesn't the two RRSPs become one when one spouse dies and 50% goes to CRA on last spouse dying. RRSPs are great for high wage earners, TFSAs for those making less than $60K who can save. As for capital gains I assume it was claimed on a home owned and sold while owning the cottage so they did get the freebee on the appreciation of the house. Pretty normal stuff just no understanding of taxes by parents or offsprng.

Seems to me there should be an expansion of the parks in other boundaries to compensate and particularly when there may be high value habitats adjacent and just outside the park.

Just came back from Wales and in Cardiff their Victoria Park has dogs off leash as a matter of practice amongst people walking kids and in strollers. The dogs stick with their owners who pay close attention to them and clearly pick up after them. Never was a growl or a problem between owners and non owners with no leashes on dogs but close at hand. Nobody with their nose in their phones though.Remarkably socialized city dogs who likely do this daily.
