VIDEO: Ban speed cameras? Not so fast, protesters tell Doug Ford
46
This is irrelevant when the drivers arent paying attention and are being reckless. You can follow every rule as a pedestrian- spoken and unspoken- and still be nearly hit by somebody going too fast. I'll give you an example based on my own experience. I was crossing at the lights on the corner of Worthington and Fisher, going down towards the library. I stood there and waited for the walk sign, checked to make sure people were stopped before beginning to cross, but a truck came flying up Worthington behind me and started to turn just as I had started crossing, they were 3ft away from hitting me. This truck was nowhere near the intersection when my light turned green, no pedestrian can save themselves from that even with all of the advice in the world. The driver sped down Fisher after I was out of their way. Those kinds of people are who we need the cameras for. That is a behaviour you can warn kids about, but it's impossible to teach them to avoid it because its always unexpected

I strongly urge everyone to go watch the video themselves, and then come back here and realize that the man at the head of our province is indirectly telling officers (people who are supposed to uphold and follow the law) that it's okay to break it if it conveniences them, and then flaunt their position as an excuse to do it. The problem with that is that him and the officers know they can get away with it.Just wanted to put this into a perspective I know some won't think about

You were fed propaganda, Irene. Nowhere in any school in any location are students being taught how to become an animal. And if you think age appropriate discussions about gender identity is a bad thing, then you're just behind on the times.Adding something like that to a curriculum will not take away from core subjects. It would most likely fall under an "elective" style of class like art, music, or PE and therefor alternate with the other electives in a schedule that focuses on the core classes. If you don't understand why gender identity might be a good thing to talk about, you should do some research and discover that transgender students are at an increased risk of suicide. It only takes one adult who accepts the trans student to significantly lower the risk of attempting suicide, imagine how much it can be lowered if there's an entire community and safe space for them in their daily life.

People have been saying the location was bad before they even built it, including the students who were attending Chippewa during that time. I was one of them and saw the beginning of the mess 4 years ago, thankfully I graduated before they needed the fence. This has been a consistent complaint and our local government insisted the shelter wouldn't be a problem, and now here it is, a problem

I strongly urge everyone to not get stuck in the mindset of a 2 party system. You CAN and SHOULD vote for the other parties if the big 2 aren't your style. Thinking the big 2 are your only options is exactly how we get stuck in that pit.

I'd love to know how the entire conversation went, hard to base an opinion on just a single statement from it. If I were to take I guess, he probably went too far defending his stance and the combination of things said is what led to the ban, not just what we see here.

Everyone who has commented so far has forgotten that these results are based only on who voted. There are no assumptions, it's based only on the gathered data, and it's not about "labelling people". These are simply fun to look at and I have extreme doubts it's being used for anything deeper than the surface level we see here. More often than not, it's okay to take a deep breath and just enjoy things for what they are. You don't like polls? That's okay, nobody is forcing you to click on them, you have the choice to scroll past and look at the news instead.

There's a lot of mixed information online regarding dandelions and our native bees. Some say they're actually harmful, many others say they're extremely important.I say do your own research and do what works best for you. I'm personally of the belief that the first month of dandelions is extremely important due to not too many flowers blooming at this time of the year, especially within a city since many people love a short lawn and not everyone has the time or ability to maintain a garden

James did you even read the article? This isn't about them being soft, they literally do not even have a future to look forward to. This is called "existential dread" and it is stemming from the absolute mess the world is in. Everything is falling apart. It's actually unrealistic to dream about owning a home by yourself, you can't afford rent without 1-2 roommates or 2-3 jobs, the entire world is basically split down the middle politically (to an extreme, not a reasonable amount). These kids are seeing the real world as it is and are worried about the future they may or may not be able to have, that is not a result of "everything has to be given to them"

Disclaimer: I do *not* support being rude and disrespectful to a stranger based on the car they drive. But, a lot of people who bought a Tesla before the storm have gotten bumper magnetics so others know they don't support Musk and/or Trump. Might be a good idea if being associated with them is a concern for you.

Every time a section of bush gets sprayed it ruins the hunting in that area. If the effect of disrupting the wildlife is enough for even humans to notice it, how bad is it for the animals themselves?

@Barrie Citizen, autism was seen as "extremely rare" by society because kids were killed, left to die, or socially exiled for being weird and different. Are you aware of the changeling and fae myths people used to believe? The source of those is parents looking for something to blame when their child isn't behaving like normal, or that they seemed like they knew too much. It wasn't kids being swapped out by mystical beings, it was signs of autism and other neurodivergence. Humans always look for something to blame when their child isn't normal, in modern times those things are vaccines and over the counter medicine. All because people refuse to trust science and understand that it's just genetics.

@coffee_cup Most people don't have a choice for a variety of reasons. Should they be punished financially because they were dealt a poor hand in life?

There may not be any good places to put the facility but there are certainly better places.Yes I agree we need to be more understanding, but there are limits to that. The very first real lockdown I had ever experienced at that school (I think I was it was in grade 11 or 12 at the time, I'm 21 now) was because a man from that facility was terrorizing the students near the end of lunch. I understand not all the clients will behave like this, but there are enough of them that do for it to be reasonable that none of us want it near schools and old age homes. There were already enough sketchy people in that area before the facility was built (you could see the evidence through broken glass and needles in surrounding bush dating back to at least when I was still going to Alliance even), the facility has just brought more and turned it into more of a hot spot. It's simply not safe for the students, and that overthrows any understanding.

@fighting the good fightYou shouldn't be letting a stray comment cloud the truth of what is actually being suggestedRegardless of what a random comment says, that doesn't change what the actual article and the people pushing the idea says. It should be obvious that there will always be random people who say something "should be free". That's just what happens when someone doesn't want to pay for something.

I do believe cameras on busses are the responsibility of either the school board or the bus line, not the city. The money from the speed cameras goes towards the cost of using them, as well as to other traffic safety measures and infrastructure. Ford is just being dramatic, he probably got a ticket from one of the cameras and is throwing a tantrum over it.

I think Toronto should keep their nose out of our city. They praise us for our outdoor activities and "potential" but they don't mention that to benefit from that potential, they need to destroy everything good we have. I'd like my little life to stay little, it's half of the reason why I stay here

People need to stop acting like this is a vending machine for the drugs themselves. Overall it's a good thing for the community, I'll repeat the list of supplies that people have forgotten are included:- Naloxone kits- HIV testing kits- Wound care- Hygiene products- Menstrual products- Seasonal essentials such as water, foil blankets, gloves, ponchos, etcStop focusing on one detail, take a step back and see the bigger picture for what it is: a service that benefits everybody in our city
